He hasn't seen her in years. As much as he's changed, as much as he's rejected the heavy mantle of his name and his legacy for another path, he still sees her as his mother. Unlike the anger and the hatred he felt (and feels, even still) for his father, it's something different with her.

When he senses her presence on the planet it shakes him, to the core, and when he sees her face to face, it's hard to find the words to say. He's grateful for the mask.

"I would think such a high level military target would be more protected. You came alone?"

"Yes." Whether she's agreeing to the statement or answering the question, it's not immediately clear. She is alone currently, but she isn't alone on the planet.

She makes no aggressive moves, her hands rest at ease at her sides. There's a mix of concern & love in her eyes and a subtle quiet disappointment in her expression.

She's not certain where things went wrong, but she often wondered if she had done something different, could she have prevented whatever caused the tragic events that robbed her and Han of their son.

"Are you?"

"I hardly need protection," he says, meeting her gaze with his own. It's strange, the way she has always loomed so large in his memory even though she's a truly small woman. She's still his mother, he supposes, and time hasn't changed that.

"Why are you here, General Organa?"

She would beg to differ with that statement, but likely in a manner different than the one that Ren was thinking of. He was indeed fully capable of taking physical care of himself. It was his metaphysical and psychological defenses she worried over more. Especially given the way he was being pulled deeper into the dark and used by Snoke.

As for his question, she has no intentions of giving him a full answer, she can't trust him as much as it breaks her heart to admit that. Thus she'll answer the question in part, giving him her reasons for being here before him alone upon learning of his presence here.

"You are my son. I missed you. I wanted to speak with you again."

"Even after the death of Han Solo?" It's cold, calculating but there is no other way to be in this situation. If he allows himself to be affected by the presence of his mother or the death of his father, the carefully-constructed shell he has will crumble and fall away.

Part of him wants to go to her, to embrace her and ask for forgiveness but another, more rational part of him knows that he's gone too far. There is no way that his mother will accept him back without consequence and it is that, the fear of consequence, that stays his hand.

There's a brief flash of a stricken look of pain and grief that comes to her eyes and expression at the question. The question is a dagger thrust, one that despite the lack of her expressing the pain caused by it, is felt very keenly.

"Yes." The word is spoken quietly, almost weary. She wants to believe that it's still possible to bring her son home, but he makes it so hard.

"You'll always be my son, no matter what you do. I will always care about you. I like to think that you still care about me in some small way." The fact he hadn't made any effort to strike her other than verbally gave her some small hope that all was not lost. It reminded her in a way of how Luke was with their father, never giving up on trying to reach him no matter what was done or said after he'd learned the truth.

She would strive to save her son in the same way, by never giving up on him.

"I am also a valuable political prisoner," Kylo says. Her words affect him more than he wishes to admit so he deflects it, pushes it back on her. If she's the one in the wrong, he doesn't have to think about his own culpability.

"I can imagine the Resistance would very much like to have me in custody. They could get quite a lot of information about First Order operations just by interrogating me."

A soft small sigh escaped at the deflection, but he was still here with her. They were still speaking civilly without the threat of violence. It was progress of a sort. Hopefully she could build upon it and not have it fall to pieces before her.

"I don't see you that way, Ben. You could help the Resistance, yes, but I wouldn't let them force you to do so. I wouldn't let anyone of them use you like Snoke is using you. You mean too much to me."

If she could save her son from Snoke's grasp and if Luke returned, that surely would be a rather large blow against the Order. Yes, the knowledge that he has could be of considerable value but she wouldn't take it from him by force. She wouldn't stoop that low against her own child.

"Ben? I haven't been Ben in years," Kylo scoffs. Still, it affects him for his mother to call him by name and he closes his eyes, trying to will away the emotions. It's different with her. His father had none of the Force within him, did not understand what he was going through at all. His mother...his mother gave him the Force.

"How do you know I could be Ben Solo again?"

"You'll always be Ben to me." She replied with a quiet conviction. "You may call yourself by another name and try to use it to distance yourself from your past, but you can always come back to who you used to be."

She wanted to close the distance between them, to touch him once more. Part of her wanted to take the chance and see if she might benefit from showing her son she is not afraid of what he might do to her, despite his prior actions toward his father. Part of her knew it for a fool's gamble and that she shouldn't risk her life in such a manner. She's still needed by the Resistance, her loss would be a considerable blow to them currently.

Yet if she succeeded here, she'd deal a considerable blow to the Order and have her son back.

"My father...redeemed himself. If he could return to being Anakin Skywalker once more, you can be Ben again."

Kylo has a very skewed view of his grandfather. Lord Vader had been one of the greatest Siths of all time and he had done much to help unite the galaxy under the rule of the Empire. He only failed because of his love for his children, the weakness that allowed Luke Skywalker to defeat him.

"Love is a weakness," he says harshly. Still, it doesn't change the fact that he does feel love for his mother. He thinks that a part of him, no matter how small, will always feel love for Leia Organa.

"That's what Snoke wants you to believe." She replied, deciding on going through with the gamble. She stepped forward, closing the remaining distance between them, lifting a hand to rest it gently over one of her son's arms. She hoped the gesture of trust and affection would break through better than her words had so far.

"I still love you and I don't consider that love a weakness."

Kylo almost shies away from the touch, startled that she would touch him. She would touch him even after what he's done and what he's become?

"I've gone too far. I can't come back from where I am now, you know that. Look inside you, Mother, you know it to be true."
